Procrastination Pitfall – by Jess Lucia

My plan last night was to write, create and give myself the space to brainstorm and generate ideas. What actually happened – I procrastinated (albeit I did get my over 250 unread emails to zero… yay!!!). It was satisfying to get the little red notification on the email icon gone, yet I felt disappointed that I didn’t keep my commitment to myself.

Often we feel pressured to keep our commitments to others, but then may put the ones that we make to ourselves on the back burner. This then leads to difficulty trusting ourselves and feeling uncertain about our ability to follow through. Sometimes we may not notice this lack of trust in ourselves and we need to dig beneath the surface to explore our beliefs around this.

One way to create more trust in ourselves is by repeatedly producing evidence that we can trust ourselves. Make small commitments (big commitments may be harder to keep at first and feel overwhelming) and follow through on them. Schedule them in your calendar and honour them like you would if it involved something really important with a close friend. Notice when you’re following through and where there is have room for growth. Of course, many things in life are out of our control, but when we trust ourselves, we can be more confident in how we will respond.

Self compassion is key – if you need to reschedule because you’re really not able to follow through at that moment for a legitimate reason, be gentle with yourself like you would a loved one.
